A MOOR’S TILLER HEAD 18TH CENTURY

Wooden tiller head depicting a Moor with turban.
A cape with flowing collar is being kept together by means of a golden buckle.
The Moor’s head is decorated with gilded earrings, a turban and a gilded ostrich feather.
Very delicately cut, hailing from a Dutch boeier from the 18th century.
In the 18th century small and refined helm’s heads such as these were used as decoration
of the helm; later, in the course of the 19th century these decorations disappeared.
This kind of ship’s decoration was applied on small types of ships in Holland and Flanders (Belgium).
Wooden ships in the 18th century often flaunted their stern post.
As they floated by on rivers and canals one’s view was automatically drawn to this part of the ship.
That is why the rudder at the back of the ship also got a lot of attention.
At this moment we have a small collection of these exclusive tiller heads in perfect condition.
